Choose the Right
From: Kevin M. Bulloch Sent: Monday, November 29, 2010 8:20 AMTo: New York Utica MissionSubject: President's Weekly Message, November 29, 2010 November 29, 2010 Dear Elders and Sisters, I have been reflecting on our discussion in Zone Conference about the development of faith as it relates to the righteous use of agency. It reminded me of an old Calvin and Hobbs cartoon I am going to attempt to attach to this email. It illustrates something President James E. Faust taught very well. He said, we “need to understand… that private choices are not private; they all have public consequences. There is a popular notion that doing our own thing… is our own business and affects no one but us… But this is simply not true” (Ensign, May 1987, p. 80). Each day we are faced with choices. We exercise our agency in making those choices. Each choice invites a whole new set of circumstances that require more choices, not only by us individually, but also by others. For example, if a missionary chooses not to be obedient, his companion has to make some difficult choices in relation to how to respond to his companion’s disobedience. The Missionary Handbook states, “If you notice any inappropriate situation or behavior, discuss it with your companion. If the matter is not resolved, have the courage and love for your companion to ask your mission president for help… Your loyalty is first to the Lord, then to your mission president….” (p.31-32) It requires what can be a very difficult choice to follow that counsel. Yet, a missionary cannot be completely obedient and ignore the disobedience of their companion. We cannot live independent of each other. What we do affects those around us. We must remember that each circumstance we find ourselves in presents us with an opportunity to increase our faith through the righteous use of agency. We will all eventually come to know the truth of the oft repeated phrase, “If you have not chosen the kingdom of God first, it will in the end make no difference what you have chosen instead” (Maxwell, Ensign, May, 1984; October, 1999, p. 13). Our individual choices not only have an effect on those around us, but also on our ability to receive and respond to the influence and guidance of the Spirit. Choices that influence the degree to which we have the influence of the Holy Ghost in turn will affect our investigators, potential investigators, and many others. It is comforting to know that the righteous use of agency in making correct choices invites the influence of the Spirit and an endowment of increased faith. With increased faith, miracles can happen and lives are blessed. Thus we see, that it truly is by the seemingly small and simple choices we make that great things are brought to pass (Alma 37:6). May the Lord bless us to “Choose the right, when a choice is placed before [us]” (hymn 239). We congratulate the following on their baptism this week: Mikaila Berkgren in Ithaca, taught by Elders Neilson, Egbert and Bowles; Theresa Pessler in Watertown, taught by Sisters Ream, Cox and Goettsche; Gary Zayas in Utica, taught by Elders Cutler and Swain; and Melia Steed was baptized in Elders Johnson and West’s area of the Albany 1st Ward. I hope you have a wonderful week, President Bulloch

Half a thought
"Hey ya'll got some time thought I might share a half a thought! I say half because I don't have my scriptures with me and I don't have the verse memorized!
I do know you can find it in Luke 2:52. In this small verse Luke teaches us how Christ grew up. There are for main things there and again i don't remember exactly how it is worded but i remember that it says he grew in knowledge, physical health, spiritually and socially.
If you think about it they all kinda connect together in one way or another, but up until lately I've often wondered how I could be more Christ-like. And the answer simple states in this scripture that its not only our spirituality. It's also how we treat others in a social aspect how we treat our own selves (our bodies) and how we treat the brain and ability that God gave us to think and reason.
It is my prayer that not only myself be more Christ-like but also that I might help others find the blessings of living such lives. Thank you all for the examples you are to me in being a Christ-like person.
Much Love,
Elder Ray Dandridge"

MM's Manner of Men ought ye to be?
"Hey Everyone!
How are you doing? I thought that today since I have a little time I'll share a little thought!
It's based on one of my most favorite scriptures... well at least I like the first half of the verse it teaches a very profound principle. It is in the 2nd book of Nephi 9:16 it states; 'And assuredly, as the Lord liveth, for the Lord God hath spoken it and it is his eternal word, which cannot pass away, that they who are righteous shall be righteous still, and they who are filthy shall be filthy still,...' (italics added.)
You see that is what this life is really all about. We are here to become something, and what what ever it is that become in this life is what we will be in the world to come. And like it says in that scripture if we become righteous then we will then be righteous, and filthy be filthy. The same thing applies to being lazy or being active, faithful or unfaithful, and obedient to God's commandments or not. The most comforting thing to me about this and what gives me hope is the knowledge that those who live this life the best they can trying their absolute hardest to be like our Savior. That person will still be a person who tries their hardest to be Christ like.
The Mediator of all of us will then gladly bear our burden and say unto us 'Well done thou good and faithful servant.'
My challenge to each of you is the same as Christ when He said 'What manner of men ought ye to be? Verily, I say unto you even as I am.' (3 Nephi 27:27)
I Love you all and look forward to hearing from you,

Happy 4th of July 2010

"For the 4th Elder Powers and I were asked to speak at a lake side service held for all the churches in Trumansburg. (Talk about giving a scary talk, this one was in front of 3-4 other ministers of other religions!) I spoke on the Gospel of Jesus Christ (faith, repentance, bapt, Holy Ghost, and Endure to the End.) It went really well! one of the Branch members got a picture of me preaching with the lake behind me and a big tree behind me and a book of mormon in my hand it looks really cool! i need to get a copy of it :) Then we went to a members home and sat around her fire pit and ate wild black berries (they actually call them black caps because they are so small they look more like a cap then a berry i guess either way i was thrilled!) Then we went to go watch a movie at the church with some recent converts (Joseph Smith, prophet of the restoration. the one they show at the visitors center... yeah iv got the hook ups ;) and that was a pretty good day. I heard that Nate got heat stroke! Was he just not drinking enough water or what?
Which big fall Watkins Glen? or TaughannockFalls? Watkins Glen is cool I haven't hiked it yet and taughannock is where we had the lake side service :)
How is everything going? I bet it is hotter then all get out over there! it was 99 degrees yesterday! with a ton of humidity!
Love ya!

Like a Lighthouse

"Hey there mom and dad!
I don't know if you guys knew what you were doing when you named me but I think it actually means something more then you guys originally thought! I was studying this morning and I was looking up gospel words in the dictionary so that I might be able to better explain the words. I can't recall what word I was searching for when my eyes came across the word 'newel' and I though 'woah! it actually means something!!!???!' so i had to read it!
'newel- In a winding staircase, the central upright pillar around which the steps turn; the post at the foot or turn of any stairway' (Websters Comprehensive Dictionary, 1954)
Well that was cool! well i know what ray means but lets look at the definition.
'ray- A line or pencil of light proceeding from appoint of light;... to shoot forth or shine forth' (Websters Comprehensive Dictionary, 1954).
Well there is only one thing that I can think of what has a winding staircase or newel and rays of light is a light house.
Well thanks a lot Mom and Dad I guess I'll just have to try hard to live up to that name, but that helped me feel a little better this morning knowing that I am in away living up to that right now. You see, sailors look for these light houses so that they may be able to safely get into port. I am very grateful for the time I have now to serve as that to our Heavenly Father's children. All of His children who are searching for a safe arrival back to Him. I am very glad that I get to share His 'light' or the gospel every single day for the rest of my mission, and hopefully the rest of my mission.
Thanks Mom and Dad I love you both,
-Elder 'Light House' Dandridge"

A Teaching Moment - Thanks Elder Dandridge

"Hello Everyone!
Well I guess after popular demand it was requested that I send another one of these big letters to everyone... SO! here we go!
I was thinking that I would share with you a spiritual thought how does that sound? No? Well to bad that's what you get ;) I have been thinking about a specific gospel topic the last couple days and it is one that is found in Mosiah chapter 2. sorry if I paraphrase or mis-quote the sections I don't have a ton of time to look up and do it word for word so I hope you get the idea though. In chapter 2 about vs 32 they start talking about 'listing to do evil' and for along time I didn't know what this meant so, I turned to my handy dandy dictionary and looked it up! listing means to tilt one way or the other. Just like a ship it can rock one way or the other.
So, what does this mean to 'LIST to do evil?'
Let me share with you an experience I had before my mission that also taught me this. I was working in New Mexico, and we had a truck with at least 4 pallets of block on it, so it was very heavy. We came to a point where we were going to turn around and make the truck face the other way for convenience. At this place where we were turning there was a cone. We had no idea why the cone was there only that it could potentially mean danger! So, we did not hit the cone thinking that there was just something dangerous underneath. As we made about a quarter of our U-turn we felt a sudden SLAM! It was as though we hit a wall... but there was no wall.
What had happened was there was a broken pipe under that cone causing the ground underneath the truck to sink into the ground. This was a big truck one of those Ford 450 flat beds. And the bottom of the bed was on the ground we sunk in that much.
So what am I trying to say exactly?"

"To often do we think like this with our lives! Such as, 'Well how long can I watch this TV show until I change the channel?' or 'How late can I walk in the door until I'm in trouble?' this is 'Listing to do evil' as King Benjamin might explain it.
It is often thought how much bad stuff in a movie makes it too bad or more common in youth 'how long can I kiss before it's a sin?' My answer to there to questions is the same. The sin is in your heart. Is your thoughts and your heart beyond the point of what you are doing is that where you truly want to be? Why as humans do we do this? Why do we try to 'get away with' as much as we can?
May I leave a thought for you? How about you try what I call 'List to do good!' watch the best TV shows, listen to the best songs, read the best books. Do more then what is asked by God. By doing so I promise it will make all the diffrence! I know this because it has worked for me.
Now there may be some of those who have 'their truck in a sink hole,' and to you I think I need to finish that story.
The people who put the cone there must have known that someone would probably have done something like we did so they came to see. And to our rescue came a bulldozer to lift up our back wheels and let us loose. Thereby letting us do the work we needed to do that day.
The same is with life. Jesus Christ is that bulldozer and there isn't a truck that is to heavy for Him to lift. All we have to do is allow Him to do it. He will lift you out of your 'sinkholes' and allow you to do the work that you were sent here to do.
I do hope that this message was clear because I know if you understand and apply these principals that the Lord WILL bless you more than I or you can understand. Please 'list to do good' and He will bless you.
Love Always

Pres. Bulloch's message
March 1, 2010
Dear Elders and Sisters,
Wow! It's March! They tell me winters can be long in New York, but March sounds to me like spring is near. Perhaps it is the possibility of winter lingering that has led me to my message today. Among the virtues that have been referred to as the "qualifications for missionary service" in DC 4 is patience (DC 4:6). It doesn't take long as a missionary to realize why it is listed. Preach My Gospel says "Patience is the capacity to endure delay, trouble, opposition, or suffering without becoming angry, frustrated, or anxious. It is the ability to do God's will and accept His timing" (p. 120). We live in a world that is out of patience. We want things to happen now, to be fixed now, to end now, to be ready now, etc. I was reminded of something I heard once-"Patience is a virtue, catch it if you can; it is seldom found in women, and never found in man." Patience is a rare virtue indeed. Yet as we think about it, aren't we glad that our Father in Heaven is so patient with us? I have often prayed that God would grant me the ability to be as patient with others as He has been with me. I am so glad He is patient!
Patience is required in many areas. We must learn to be patient with people, with circumstances, with difficulties and challenges, and even with the Lord's timing. The Lord has repeatedly counseled us to "bear with patience thine afflictions" (2 Corinthians 6:4; Alma 17:10; 20:29; 26:27; 34:41-41). In doing so we will find ourselves "waiting" until the Lord in His wisdom decides to comes to our aid (Psalms 37:9; Isaiah 40:31; Mosiah 21:34). President Monson said, "Our problem is that we often expect instantaneous solutions to such challenges, forgetting that frequently the heavenly virtue of patience is required" (PMG, p. 120). I noticed that the March Ensign has several articles on dealing with adversity. It is something we all face. Paul taught we should "glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope" (Romans 5:3-4; see also James 1:3-4). Patience is a virtue that is necessary in overcoming the "natural man" (see Mosiah 3:19). The Lord commanded us to "Continue in patience until ye are perfected" (DC 67:13). Missionary work gives us plenty of opportunity to develop our patience. As you do so, you will find it is easier to be happy.
We congratulate Warner and Maria Rodriguez in Greene for their baptism into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were taught by Elders Williams, Daniels-Brown, and Nielson.
We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming Zone Conferences. Please keep up the good work.
Sincerely,
President Bulloch

Hey everyone!
I can't believe that it's already time to write again! Well I've FINALLY got my new email account all figured out so I decided to do the mass letter again! This week was AWESOME! As you might already know NY was just SLAMMED with a blizzard. Let me tell you it was waaay fun! We got 12-14 inches in the matter of 24 hours! Why is that awesome? Well it gave Elder West and I the opportunity to do tons of service shoveling snow for everyone. By doing so it helped us find a TON of new people to teach! I couldn't help thinking about Ammon and how he was serving King Lamoni and how he really didn't need to go the extra mile... but he did. And so did we and because we followed Ammons example we were able to find people who where or are now being prepared by our Heavenly Father. And I hope I can carry that mentality through out the rest of my life, because I love the feelings that that Christlike love or charity gives me and also the blessings it brings. So I guess that brings me to my challenge to you is find someone that is in need of help, and show them your love for them and I promise by doing so you will come to understand this gospel more fully and also come to the knowledge or deeper knowledge that Christ is our Savior and it was through his Love and Charity that we can one day live with our Father in Heaven. I say this because I know this, that charity brings us closer to our Savior Jesus Christ.
Much Love-Elder Ray Dandridge

Family!
Hey I thought I'd tell you about my ADVENTURE down to Binghamton, because it was Quite Exciting, SO!
I went up to Utica and got there at about 10:30 and didn't get out of there until 3:00pm! So, we had to take Ithica's luggage with us because they didn't have enough room! So Elder Lyman and I were Crammed full of missionary STUFF in a Toyota Corolla! as we passed through Cortland almost to Ithica we hit a really BAD SNOW Storm and someone in front of us tapped their brakes and so did Lyman, and HE started to swerve and then our car went into a BIG DITCH!! We had to call a Tow truck to pull us out and that was $60 Thankful for reimbursements! so we had Cortland Elders come pick us up and we stayed the night there and then we were picked up by Elder Hilton (AP) and Elder Ware(ZL)and they helped us get the car running again it had a bent rim, So we drove from Cortland to Binghamton on a DOUGHNUT! but I got there all safe and sound and I am LOVING it!
Thank you everyone for everything you do for me I'm so blessed to come from such a good family with loving parents and siblings and sibling in laws and nieces...and NATHAN... (Ya dude Love YA) (I still gotta pick on ya BRO) Buy the way who was the 1st one to pass out all of their pass along cards??
Go to Church/Pray/ Read/ Practice CPR and Unlimited blessings will shower upon you I PROMISE!

Happy Transfer! Binghamton NY
"HI MOM!
Well the new area is Binghamton, NY there is a ward there Binghamton is a little smaller than Syracuse BUT the city isn't split in half so... And my companion is gonna be Elder West he's only been out for 3 months... so I think we're going to have A LOT of FUN! I'm sending a package home of some stuff that I don't use and some stuff that I'd like to keep but not lug around.
Idk what you should do...I would think you should go to maricopa with her so she could get used to that ward and feel comfortable with those people!
OOO yeah have those guys write me I'm sending my trench coat home because I NEVER use it! but hey you could ask Dave if he wants it he might be able to use it there.
Color of my room? WELL I think out of all my friends rooms I liked Guirellmos room the most I forgot the other 3 colors but one wall was chalkboard paint and then he let all his friends color on it... it think that would be fun even after I move out it would be fun for the grandkids too ...
how is Mesa?
love ya!!!"
